How can I become an umpire or scorer?

If you would like to be an umpire or scorer for one of our teams then please contact any of the captains, managers or coaches.

What if I know nothing about umpiring or scoring?

As long as you have an interest in learning then this really doesn’t matter. Our current umpires and scorers will be happy to show you what to do and you can be broken in gently with plenty of support.

How do I learn more about umpiring and scoring?

The Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers welcomes new Members, and provides full training and examinations leading to qualification for umpires and scorers. Plenty of good information can be found on the pages on their web site. If you wish to go on one of the courses or take one of the qualifications then please contact the club secretary.

Courses will be funded by Petersfield CC.

Tom Smith’s Cricket Umpiring and Scoring is highly recommended as the book to read

Tom Smith's New Cricket Umpiring and Scoring

You can read the Laws of Cricket, Cricket Victoria’s Umpiring for Beginners and Cricket Scoring – The First Steps . The end of this manual shows the umpire’s signals and recommended symbols. We usually use the “+” sign for a wide with any additional runs scored from this indicated as dots in the four corners. We also use the “W” or “R” symbol for a wicket or a run out.
